Bird

Hit the bird yesterday with Jake. This was my first day out this season. I have been super busy working 2 jobs and going to school, it's taken a bit of effort to get up here. Snow was good. Better than expected. There was still some stashes in the Cirque, and Black Jack was super good. Groomers were fast and soft. It was basically walk on Trams all day. I always forget how life changing it is up there. It seriously adds years to your life! Here is a little clip Jake took of me just below the Wasatch Powder Birds landing pad going to the parking lot.

Skate Night

Me, Tuck, Jeff and Andy hit up SOJO the other night. It was super fun. Andy was basically trying it for the first time. He ended up catching on pretty good after a few runs. The stoke level was awesome!

Southern Utah - The Provo Brothers

Every time I have gone through Southern Utah in the winter, I have seen some super good lines to shred. Looks like the Provo brothers thought the same thing. Sick lines guys.

Abisinthe World Premier for NOWHERE

Last night was the World Premier for this years absinthe film, NOWHERE. The air was nice and cool with a bit of rain coming down. As we pulled into Park City all the feelings of pre season snowboarding set in. It was super rad!!! Tons of good riding. Guys are getting crazy these days! Jake Blauvelt and Bode Merril had super insane parts. Dan Brisse did some ridculous gap over a road between two parking garage roofs. The pow surfing part was legit for sure. I wonder how the local guy up in logan will feel about it. He claims to have invented the sport and that he will personally take care of anyone who tries to rip him off. I wonder if he knows people like Wolfgang Nyvelt have been doing it for a while now. Or that snowboarding started from boards with no bindings. This flick got me way stoked for the season though. CAN'T WAIT!!! Here is the teaser again to watch. Enjoy. Definitely buying this one.

Skating

So we have been trying to get the skate nights rolling out more consistent. Me and Jake and Tuck hit it up a couple weeks ago. Hit Sandy and then over to SoJo with Benny. It was good to skate with him cause he could see all the stuff we were doing wrong and helped out a ton. Last week Tuck was in Hawaii so me and Jake hit up Sandy. Jake got the drop in like it was nothing. We have been getting free stuff at the Del Taco the last few times and this last week was difficult. Head guy at the register must have been employee of the year. We had got some free shakes from the lady a couple weeks before no problem. We asked this guy if we could get the premium shake sample and he said, "NO". We said the other lady just hooked us up with the water cup size shakes and he still said, "NO. The shake maching weel breaka the cup." So later Jake went up to get a napkin or something and the guy got super fired up and said, WHAT DO YOU NEED? NO SHAKE!" Then I tried to ask the lady working and she was working drive through, and he spotted me. He ingnored me best as possible, so I asked if maybe we could try the chocoalte instead, maybe the chocolate was easier to make. He threw his arms in the air and yelled, "Strawberry or Chocolate?" I went with the Strawberry. I have never seen a shake made faster in my life. He even topped it with whip cream. So good.

Moonlight Riding at Snowbird

So after the storm that came in we were itching to get some turns. It was almost a full moon so we decided to hike up Peruvian Gulch at the bird. It was me, my dad and Jake. We started hiking around 9 pm. The bottom half of the mountain had a pretty good crust on it from being sunbaked earlier in the day. We got just below the bottom of upper silver fox in the big flat and Jake was feeling the altitude pretty good. Don't think he has acclimated from Florida yet. I chilled with Jake at the flat and my dad pushed a bit further. The snow got really deep fast and he was not able to summit. We ended up getting some pretty sick turns though til we hit the lower part of the mountain. The crust grabbed onto our boards and wouldn't let us go. By the time it was all said and done it was 2:30 am. Jake blew chunks in the park n ride parking lot. I was looped out of my head pretty good from being so tired. If we would have been pulled over they would have most likely thrown me in jail. It was a rad night for sure.

This is How We Started Snowboarding

My dad had some of these back when I was a little kid that he had made in high school. Dad, do you have any idea where they are? I think he originally made them for the sand, but we started riding them on little hills in the snow when we were kids. I think its time we start making some again.

SICK!!!!!

Yesterday at Snowbird was one of those days you never forget. The canyon had been closed and had no estimated time of reopening, so me and Jake tried to figure out when to leave. The canyon opened sooner than expected and took us by surprise. We should have been in line waiting at 4 am. We ended up putting it together and rolling up around 11:30. Tram was packed so we went around the world. As we were heading up Little Cloud Lift, we saw patrol heading out Road to Provo dropping hand charges. So we hung out at the top for a few minutes waiting for it to open. We saw a patrolman coming from the top of Hidden Peak and sure enough he was coming to drop the rope. The energy building was off the charts! I yelled to Jake to buckle in and it was on!!!!! I dropped about a quarter the way out and Jake dropped just after that. It was unreal!!! First tracks on Little Cloud Bowl after 50 inches plus of snow!!!! It was one of those runs you never get out of your head. We hit the cirque the rest of the day for some good lines as well. Chalk another one up at the bird. We were too amped to get any action shots. Maybe one day we will hire someone to take pics for us.

Thanks everyone for your patience. Patrol and UDOT are working very hard to get the road and mountain opened tomorrow; keep checking the snow report for updates. Here’s a sneak peak of what to expect from a patroller post-route.

Please Open the Canyon

Snowbird as of this afternoon on the plaza deck. It is still coming down hard. The resort has been shut down all day as well as yesterday. If they can get the canyon open tomorrow will be unreal!!!!

31 inches in 24 hours (and a covered Plaza Deck) has everyone is high spirits! The upper mountain is not planning on opening today, check the snow report for the latest news.

WEENTER CAMP 2010

This year's winter camp was sick! We went up last weekend on Friday afternoon. A big storm had just put down about 2 feet of fresh and we had to break trail with the snowmobiles about 4 times to pack it down enough to get the gear sled in. This year we had, me, my dad, Jake and his bro in law Jared, and Jessie and Jeff. We were stoked to use the shack we built this fall and rebuilt again after it got chainsawed down. We got it all dug out and when I took the door off the most horrible stench hit me right in the face! I was dry heaving pretty hard. The mice and whatever other animals had taken over the shack and it was full of crap and other goodies. So we ended up sleeping under the stars with just out sleeping bags with 5 degree or colder temps that night. I was super caffeine drunk from the giant Red Bull gift from Jake and about 4 Mt Dew's. Then had a sleeping pill to put me out just before sleeping and I felt like I was at the dentist with about 10 times the legal amount of laughing gas. The next morning we rode the sleds to the base of the zone we always ride and had to hike the rest of the way due to the deep new snow. It was a rough hike up through the fresh pow but super worth it. When we got on top the snow on the cornice shifted a bit and I think Jared messed himself pretty good. This was his first backcountry snowboarding experience. He was a bit nervous but overcame the fears and had a sick run he will never forget. It was a rad time for sure!

Family Shred

Me and Linds took Christian up to Snowbird and rode Chickadee. It was super fun. Chrish showed us some moves like "rocket speed" and played some red light green light and follow the leader. He didn't want to leave. It is such a blast riding with your kids seeing them stoked on something that you love so much. Can't wait for many more of those days to come. Pretty soon Kanyon will get up with us. It will be rad when I am checking the boys out of school on Pow days!

Grooming Snowbird

So last night me and Jake were chillin and thought it would be fun to just head up to Snowbird and just chill. I decided to bring the snow skate along just in case. We only had street clothes on and ended up hiking under the peruvian lift getting fresh pow turns til like midnight. Snowskating a foot of pow is not the easiest thing to do, and we ended up taking some super good falls! Our jeans were basically solid ice and shoes were full of snow. About halfway into our snowskating one of the groomer cats drove by so we flagged him down and asked to ride along. The driver invited us in and we ended up grooming with the cat driver for a good hour or so all over the Peruvian side. He was doing the winch cat so we were hitting some pretty steep terrain winched up to a big pine tree up top. It was sick!!!

Ken Blocks New Whip

It's Magical!

"It's magical" was the only way we could describe the riding last night at Brighton! Me, my dad and Jake hit the night riding up in some of the best conditions ever. It was snowing on us the whole time but the moon was peering through the clouds once in a while. We kept hitting the trees in the dark and getting every pow slash we could find. Toward the end of the night we went out past the lights toward the Great Western lift and found an untouched pow run out in the dark with a touch of moonlight poking through. All we could keep saying was, " It's Magical!! " It was so quiet and peaceful. It was one of those life recharge moments that can only come from a few things. Shredding pow in the dark with no one else around is one of those things.

Christine Brennan doesn't know what she's talking about. from pierretube on Vimeo.

For those who have not seen this, get ready to be baffled. No doubt all of our hearts go out to Kevin Pearce, whether we snowboard or not. It's never cool to see someone injured like this. But this lady has no idea what she is talking about. What about all winter olympic sports, besides curling? Are they not trying to go faster and bigger all the time. Should they put a speed limit on the downhill? A distance limit on the ski jump? What about the aerialist competition? Why not just cancel the oplympics all together? Isn't the olympics about athletes doing the very best they can? So why in the world should they have a limit put on them? Snowboarding has always been about trying new things and pushing each other. Whether an Olympian trying a double cork or just someone linking their first turns, it's all about progression as well as all other sports. Anyways, watch this and see what you think.

The Canyons

Me and Sean hit the Canyons today. Super fun! Just took some laps through the park and Rode some groomers. We did take one run off 9990 but there wasn't too much coverage. Even after the storms this week so far ( which did not snow 10 feet of anything. More like 1 foot) it looked like we have had 1 storm all year up there. Purrty sad. But still way fun! Compressed my back though coming up short on a jump in the park. Not so good. Makes me feel old.

Chillin With Jake

So me and Jake chilled today after 2 years of him being in Florida. We hit up Del Taco then some snow skating at a park in A.F. Some kids were sledding and we told them if they went down and rode the muddy icy dirt gap we would put them on Youtube. So they charged it. Here is there shot to fame. We thought we should build a fun box to jib this winter to take around to parks and stuff so we hit up Home Depot for a while. There were a couple other dudes in looking for plexiglass for the same thing. Then we headed to Cal Ranch and figured out how much more quality Carhartt hoodies are then anyone else, and that they come in good sizes for us big dudes. Seriously Carhartt is sick! Then we rolled across to Watts to check out trucks. To top it off we grubbed up some In and Out and sat freindly style at a table with an older guy and his wife who had to leave suddenly with a Viagra type panic look on the Husbands face. Super good times for sure. Good to have you back dude.

Ten Feet Next Week???

Ten feet next week?

January 13, 2010 by Tahoe Loco

WEDNESDAY JAN. 13 4:37 PM…The National Weather Service has just issued an advisory about the big change in the weather pattern we have been talking about here for a few days. They’re saying that snowfall amounts of 10 feet or more are possible over the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada next week. We’ve heard big numbers before, most recently in December, and they have a way of fizzling as the storms approach. But that is a really big number. It’s worth paying attention to. Here is the notice:

A very strong jet stream is making its way across the Pacific and
will transition interior northern California into a wetter weather
pattern next week. As a result… an extended period of much needed
significant precipitation is expected. A relatively weak storm moves
through Saturday… then much stronger and wetter systems will begin
Sunday and continue into next week. Although timing of individual
storms is difficult at this point… it looks like every 24 to 36
hours a system will move through. Rainfall totals by the end of next
week could exceed 5 to 10 inches in the lower elevations with snow
amounts of 10 feet or more possible over the higher Sierra
Nevada. Snow levels will generally be around 4000 to 5500 feet
but at times could drop into the foothills. There is also likely
to be periods of breezy to windy conditions and travel into the
mountains is likely to be impacted.

Mmmm Fountain Drink and Fecal Matter

STUDY: Nearly half of soda fountains contaminated with fecal matter
January 11th, 2010 @ 3:49pm
By Dr. Kim Mulvihill

SAN FRANCISCO -- Many of us have filled up our cups at the local gas station. But those self-serve soda fountains may be serving up a lot of bacteria.

Researchers from Hollins University in Virginia tested more than 100 beverages from self-serve and staff-serve dispensers. What they found coming out of these machines is pretty unappetizing.

"We obtained soda fountain beverages from a wide variety of fast food establishments and found that a significant number of the drinks had levels of bacteria, including coliforms, which would not be allowed in municipal drinking water," said Dr. Renee Godard, professor of biology and director of environmental studies at Hollins, and a co-author of the study. "To our knowledge, no one has looked at bacterial contamination from soda fountain machines before, and our results may have public health implications. They signal the need for regulations that enforce the manufacturer's recommended cleaning regimens for these beverage dispensers."

They found 48 percent of the beverages contained fecal matter.

More than 11 percent were contaminated with E. coli and 17 percent were tainted with a bacteria known to cause meningitis.

Most of the bacteria showed resistance to one or more of the 11 antibiotics tested.

In these drinks, they also found smaller amounts of other kinds of germs including staphylococcus, klebsiella and candida.
